(Live on radio the radio of the school and performance) Nauris

I think I'm too smart. Smarter than others. It seems that they do not think about their actions, about their words. But I always do. That's the problem. What should I say? When should I say it?
My main skill is my good memory and memory for faces. I can see a face in Riga - Oh, a man from Seda! But what is his name? I won't know. But I'm one hundred per cent for sure that he is from Seda.
Our class was the largest. How many were we? 10 people maybe. Most of my friends, acquaintances, classmates have all left Seda. The classmate with whom I spent more time, and talked more, left before receiving the documents.
I'm always alone. This is my condition for a long time. Since I was fourteen, fifteen. I try to convince myself that's how it should be.
I am not recognized, but I recognize everyone. Sometimes I feel like that I'm like… that I can't be seen. Nobody notices that I'm here.
And I'm trying not to… really bring attention to myself. You have to know how to be alone.

I showed him the clock and told him, if by seven i'm not here, then know that you are staying for the night.
He didn't run around the village during the summer!
”Everybody is together and playing football but i have to stay here in the field of beet.
”Don't worry son, maybe another time. There will come a time when you can also play”
His godfather taught him to mow the hay, his godmother taught him to milk a cow. So? Now he understood what working meant!
He looked at the clock and said to his nanny ”No, mom won't be here tonight” That's how he grew up.
Now he is abroad. He is happy when he works from 8am till 8, 10 in the evening!

A: I knew since the 5th grade that I wanted to be a police officer.
D: My idea was that I would be a gardener.
A: But it didn't work out with the documents there, and I wanted to become a border guard.
D: But to join, you needed a referral from someone in the place where you want to go.
A: It also went wrong there, and then I had to go to work, because mom and dad wouldn't support me.
D: Then I was a janitor, then a sanitary.
A: And after that there was no one nudging me.
B: Then they put me in the laboratory and all the girls said: "Go and study, go and study, go and study!".
A: But no one pushed me to study! They only insisted that I needed to work!
B: And so I went to Riga for medical school.
A: And I haven't gotten any further.
(Pause)
B: I come to work in the morning.
A: Then I walked through all of mine… What are they to me? Not subordinates, no, but you can't call them colleagues aswell. Somewhere around a thousand are beneath my feet.
B: Blood tests must be taken first.
A: You have to check if everything is fine, if a branch hasn't fallen somewhere. Then I go to my booth to get my working tools.
B: Then I looked through a microscope. Sometimes I came across some blood results that I had to doubt myself - whether it was correct or not.
A: And then I show the guys where to dig the hole.
(Pause)
B: I saved two people from death.
A: If you do it as a job, it doesn't matter whether you work in a shop or repair roads.
B: The inhabitants all passed through me.
A: I probably don't want everyone back in my life.
B: If anyone doesn't want to talk to me, let them. I won't talk too! But who wants to talk to me - all the teachers, all the neigbours, everyone I know.
A: I don't recall who they are. When I am handed the death certificate, that name means absolutely nothing to me. But I don't have anyone here myself. I haven't had anyone here.
And I'm trying to be so… not really paying attention. You have to know how to be alone.

(Live stream on the radio of the school) Laura

They think I need a lot. It's my faith… maybe it bothers them that I have a belief.
This was a neglected place. People got together and figured out how to make this place interesting - interesting for tourists and other residents.
An hotel, a cafe, a train to the bog. Everyone wants to come, see bears, wolves, birds, whatever they can see here.
And it will not be those who live behind the fence. They will be the locals.

I tried to go back to my country. I didn't feel at home at all. They made me feel so uncomfortable, like I was a stranger at home. Seda is wonderful because everyone is a stranger here. They all came here to work in the peat factory and they can't go back. And they feel what I feel. They are not all Russian. But they have not become Latvians either.

(Performance) Lauris

I built from what I had. No doors, no roof, no nothing, just walls. I did it with babysteps. I built a stove there, put a roof on it, that's how I lived through the first winter.
I lived in the tent for 3 months. Until the first frosts. Then it became too cold to sleep in the tent. I woke up in the morning, but there was already ice all around.
Here, both the council and the courthouse blocked all possibilities for me, I couldn't get a job. Any at all.
I came to live here from Germany. My father was ill.
My stepmother found out that I lost my job there, it was a good job, and of course she kicked me out of the house.
I went to the gater and asked if I could at least be hired unofficially. I started working, bought a garage. I created with what I had.
Summer came and it became easier, but still - I had no tools. Bit by bit, I bought tools and that's how I got back on track.

All the women are standing still on the same cable machine.

C: Living together, we lost our essence.

Women exercise for a while (4-5 times) without speaking. Guna stops exercising and speaks.

A: I was never alone.
But maybe I was by myself for a couple of days in my life, and that's when I thought I should be sensible. Think about me.
C: I wanted to leave.

Guna gets off the cable machine and picks up an exercise ball, which she carries. Gunta and Diana also change their exercises. Then Guna continues talking.

A: I didn't want anyone English, no Poles, because in England everyone is either English or Polish. I looked around the gym.

Guna looks at the men in the audience.

Here, a Pole, Englishman, Englishman, Pole… And I thought: Oh, this one is handsome! I don't know where he comes from.
I threw my exercise ring at that guy to get him to say something. I need to hear the accent. But he just smiles and gives me the ring back. I say, "We'll train together tomorrow."

All women swap machines. Then, when they are all seated, they start exercising. After a while, Diana starts talking while continuing to exercise.

C: When we came, I said - a young family should build their own life, not together with the whole household.
A: And the next day he talks about his hometown. And that was my dream because I was always performing in the circus for these rich snobs in London and I thought, 'one day I'll just fade away, you'll never see me again. I will go to a nice place - there will be nature and trees, and there will be no one there. I came to Seda.

All women switch equipment. Guna lies on the flat padded bench. She lifts the bar a couple of times, the last time she struggles. Gunta and Diana help her push it. Guna sits facing forward.

C: I have one child - a daughter.
B: We also had a house, we bought it.
A: I had a child with this Latvian guy.

Diana and Gunta go and sit on a bench. Guna walks to the opposite side and picks up two kettlebells. As she walks, Diana unscrews a bottle, takes one small sip. Guna comes back, puts down the kettlebells and looks in the mirror.

A: He became depressed.

Diana takes a very long sip. She hands the bottle to Gunta. She puts the bottle down. Guna turns the other way.

A: We are not together anymore.

Diana gets up to her feet.

C: I left for my daughter.

Guna is the first to walk to the cycle rack. Then Diāna follows. They sit down (without pedalling yet). Gunta stays on the bench.

B: It was the first trauma where life split in two. But all my life I wanted to go back.
A: I came back in 2014.
B: Then 2014 began.

Guna and Diana start to cycle. Then they stop spinning, but they let the wheel turn for a while.

B: We had two backpacks. We had nothing.

Guna gets off the bike trainer, looks around. Then she goes back to the treadmill where she was standing at the beginning.

A: We had nothing. I took my daughter's clothes, toys and the most important things, but I didn't have Christmas decorations, curtains and things like that. I am a circus performer. I don't need practical things. But I looked at my daughter.
B: When you're a mom, everything changes completely.
A: This will be the fourth Christmas of her life and I don't have anything for the tree. We won't even have a Christmas tree!
B: Before that I thought ”What am I afraid of? Now I understand - from people. Now I fully understand and realize it. People can do things that you would never think of.
A: What kind of mother am I, right? I'll just cut some branches.
B: I understand - if something happens here, I have to take the documents and the child and just run, because I know that there are people around who will come directly to me.

Knocking. They all look at the door.

A: There was one of the old ladies.
B: They see a flag hanging on my balcony. I know what they call me behind my back.

Knocking. Pause.

A: I opened the door and she had a cardboard box full of Christmas decorations in her hands. She says they are old. They are very old, they are not nice and shiny, but this is what she and her family have put on the Christmas tree all her life, since she lived here. Her family is gone. She sat down and watched my daughter and I decorate the Christmas tree we found on the side of the road.

Pause

B: When I wasn't living in Seda, I saw Seda in my dreams almost every night.
C: They all grew up. Jobs were needed, but there were none.
B: Not so often now.

A: Some came in, and the others went out.
There was a pig looking for her piglets. My aunt and I were heading to the house, she said she would bring the piglets with her, but I would have to help to pull the pig in to the woods.
And then you didn't understand where the plane was coming from. It was over our head.
I was five years old when that bomb went off. About 500 meters away. I was contused. When I woke up and came to my senses, there were two little piglets lying next to me.
But I don't know who took me to where my parents were in the forest. 4 kilometers from the explosion site.
Whatever happens, I'll stay here.

B: A: I don't live for the moment. Most people do. That's why they suffer. But the future is where you want to be!

A: I saw that there was a deep hole. I could see it clearly. A woman, with dark, long hair, so slim. She was in that hole, with her hand out and there was no one to help her. It seemed that she was about to scramble out, but she was dragged even deeper. Swallowed by the sand.
She hadn't strength left, but she clang to the edge. She sat on the edge of that hole and swang her legs.
The road goes right, left, straight and at the very end there is a house beyond the forest.. And there are gardens.

B: They see what they have lost, but I see everything I can still gain.
So many gardens have turned into jungles, but I explore the jungle with a shovel. Most of my garden is from there.
They gave us jars of apple juice, plums and cherries. They gave candy to my children as they used to give theirs. And I gave them vegetables and berries and lettuce, and I baked cookies. If you have something to give, you give.
I use the soil, I use the rain, the sun, everything. I have been given so much - I have so much to share with.
